The Blacksmith Association of Missouri held their winter meeting at A & K Cooperage, Higbee, Mo. Dale Kirby and his crew make beautiful oak wine barrels. They are shipped all over the country. The majority of them end up in California.

Forging a hammer.

The trade item for this meeting was anything with a heart. There was a great display, from towel holders, coat hooks, a necklace, letter openers, a heart punch, and even a couple of tomahawks with heart piercings.

The first barrel finished had the club logo burned on. For a dollar chance someone would take it home with them.

And look who brought the barrel home!!!

Teaching the grandsons

Last week Alex, the seven year old grandson wanted to forge. He made two J hooks. Brady the ten year old wasn't interested, until he saw his brother's finished products.

Today they both decided to go back to the shop to hammer.

This is what the finished product looked like.

The boy's Dad received this handmade oak back pack for Christmas. He was wanting some hooks to hang it on the wall.

This is the design the boys and the blacksmith came up with. Alex forged the left side, Brady the right. You can see they stamped their names respectively on top.

Look at all these letter openers! They were the trade item for today meeting.

One of the coolest ones was the whale opener. His mouth was razor sharp!

It was a large crowd of Smith's. The meeting was held in Excelsior Missouri at Martin's Auction Barn. The food was an extra treat, cream filled donuts, homemade pies, butter grilled ham and cheese sandwiches on homemade bread, and hot coffee on a cold day! If you weren't there, you missed a great meeting!

BAM meeting Doniphan Mo May 2011

We went to Doniphan for the BAM meeting. The highlight for Osage Bluff Blacksmith was getting to visit again with Ray Joe Hastings. He is the author of the book titled "Bow and River Gigs, Used in the Clear Streams of the Ozarks. It only got better, as we were invited to their home for a Sunday afternoon visit.

Host Chris Miller did a demo making this letter opener.

Chris also demoed this donkey hammer head.

Prior to the meetings, the host selects an item to make for a trade item. During the meeting, the items are numbered and each participating member draws a number to see which one they trade for. For this meeting the trade item was a door handle.

This is an old deep water river gig that Ray Joe brought for show and tell. Yes, show and tell isn't just for the school kids!

BAM conference 2011

We traveled to Sedalia on Thursday, March 28th for the 4 day conference of the Blacksmiths Association of Missouri. After the setup was completed, Osage Bluff Blacksmith was asked to demonstrate the making of a fish gig.

Later that evening, Roger Degner gave a demonstration of how to make a mokume gane bar. He has turned them into really nice bracelets.

Here it takes two to hold and press the coins together.

After the coins are heated they stick together and can be taken out of the holding bars.

I asked this smith if I could photograph his tatoo. He was tickled that I asked. He told me he will be the 5th generation of the See boys to be a blacksmith. I could live with this on my smith, if only his biceps looked like that. (Sorry dear)

There were competitions to be judged. The smiths were given a bar and a time limit to make a water bearing vessel. The item that held the most liquid won. Here Bob Alexander and Osage Bluff Blacksmith clown around while looking over the spoons.

There are small groups around, all discussing different things. The sign behind them says "keep off roof", seems it said nothing about keeping off a milling machine.

So, if you see one of these trailer going down the highway, follow it. It could lead you to a great hammer in.

We did survive and it turned out to be a very good sales day.

He happens to be the wife's cousin once removed.

It's been too cold to forge

The shop hasn't seen much action lately.

Extreme cold and deep snow have prevailed in Mid-Mo.

Yesterday the back door was freed up.

All it took was chipping off the ice, and then the door slid open.

The snow and ice on the roof was melting quickly.

So the dog, Bentley, and the blacksmith took a walk.
Within 50 yards of the back door he found his first deer shed.

A 4 pointer!

Today his total is up to 3 sheds!

Tomorrow maybe he will find more.

BAM January 2011 Meeting @ John Murray's

It was a cold day in New Melle Saturday, however that plus 8 inches of snow did not keep the blacksmiths away. There was a very good turn out at John's place. His shop was full of members wanting to see the demonstrators. Pat McCarty demonstrated leaf making and then forged a crow bar. Host John forged a 30 lb. hammer using his air hammer.

A wonderful lunch of whole roast hog was served. A local meat market had started the cooking process 19 hours earlier. Here Hank and Scott start the carving. The meat was so tender, moist, and delicious.

Trade items were bottle openers. These were made by Stan Brinkmann, Ken Jansen, and Bob Alexander.

Oktoberfest and German Heritage

This Saturday, the area that is known as the southside of Jefferson City, will celebrate Old Munichburg Oktoberfest. This area was established in the 1800's, mainly by German emigrants.

When the blacksmith was asked to participate, little did they know that he had ties to the area.

The Sunday News Tribune paper ran an article July 1934 about a house in the area. Here is an excerpt from that paper:

In 1850 John and Margaretta Asel bought an acre of land to built their log house. They had two sons to fill the house. Three more sons and three daughters would later fill this small home. The house was located only a short distance away from a group of Indians. Mrs. Asel at first was very terrified of them. Later they would become not only her friends but her customers. As many as thirty loaves a day were drawn from her huge oven in the side yard, to be replaced by as many pies. All of which found a ready market.

Great piles of logs, salvaged from Missouri River driftwood, supplied the fuel for this oven and for the little log smokehouse now resting in a corner of the flower-filled yard and wearing a modern coat of cement. A great ice house, forty feet square and holding many tons of ice cut from the river during the winters months, also was built upon the premises and was a great factor in the success of their business. A never failing deep wall, in times of drouth, refreshed the throats of the Indian Camp, and citizens came with their buckets from far and near. A dry cistern was used as a storage room for the valuables of many residents during the Civil War. As the bounds of the Asel property widened, much of the butchering , curing and cooking of meat was done on the place.

Margaretta, with the aid of John after market hours, was said to have made a thousand dollars selling fried sausage to the soldiers. Many sandwiches of home-made bread, pig ears and pig snoots were handed out to neighborhood boys who stood with watering mouths.

The little house does not now belong to a member of the Asel family having been rented several years ago and later sold to Anton Monat (the Blacksmith's great uncle). And if no member of the Asel family longer cared to live in the little log house, no more fitting family could have been found to occupy it.

Seated at a shining walnut table in the center of the front room, when the writer approached the open door, was Anton's father, Peter Monat, playing solitaire. In the middle of the table was a vase of lavender, hardy sweet peas. Peter Monat understands and speaks no English, and so his son, Fritz, came from a painting job across the street to act as host. Peter Monat's wife died two years ago. An enlarged kodak picture of her standing among her flowers and shrubs was near him upon a dresser. Sacred pictures upon the walls bespoke the religion of this family and a furled flag of the United States standing in the corner of the tiny stairway landing attested their loyalty to the land of their adoption. Peter Monat and his sons were born in Germany. Since the mother's death Fritz has been the housekeeper. Shining floors, spotless furniture and crisp curtains evidence his ability and his efforts. Even the kitchen cupboard, with its rows of sparking glass and glossy china, was in perfect order when he opened the doors to show us a cup brought from Meiderich, Germany, bearing his father's name and his title of Reviser in the Artsverein.

Outside, along the porch railing, and all about the house were well-attended plants and shrubs. Could the little pioneer home built by a young German immigrant nearly a century ago, have fallen into better hands?

This was the home at the corner of Ashley and Madison Street. Unfortunately it is no longer there. In the early seventies it was torn down. A concrete parking lot covers the area now.

Oktoberfest is September 25, 2010 on the south side of Jefferson City.

One of the old crafts being demonstrated will be blacksmithing.

Osage Bluff Blacksmith will be there!

Old Munichburg is Jefferson City, Missouri’s historic “South Side” neighborhood, and it’s well worth a visit! You’ll find first-class shopping, fine dining, lodging, and a big dose of German American hospitality!

Dating back to the nineteenth century, Old Munichburg is located within easy walking distance of the Missouri State Capitol and downtown Jefferson City—but once, it was connected to Jefferson City by a single bridge over Wears Creek. Settled by German immigrants escaping their homeland’s economic and political upheavals, the neighborhood was soon filled with unique brick homes, businesses, and churches.

Many of the early immigrants had come from the town of Münchberg, in Bavaria, and referred to their new home as “Münchberg” as well. Other Jefferson Citians overheard this term and misunderstood it as “Munichburg”—and the name stuck!

By the turn of the century, Munichburg had become a self-supporting community with its own fire department, inns, schools, and churches, its own dry goods, furniture, clothing hardware, and grocery stores—even its own brewery!

Old Munichburg offered the newly arrived German immigrant a place where he could learn American customs and practice his English among other Germans, become a proud citizen of the United States, and also know his children would grow up with an appreciation for their German heritage.

Fur buying session

February is always the month for the annual fur buying session in this part of the country.

Mr. Miller, the buyer is showing the girls how to grade the hide. He loves to teach the kids this art.

The blacksmith showed the son his new friction folder knives. For some reason, the blacksmith came home with one less knife after this picture was taken.

Well the grumpy old men (the blacksmith and Terry) made deer sausage this week.

The process actually started Friday when the venison and pork was ground and seasoned.

Here you see the son and oldest grandson helping in the stuffing process. This was done on Sunday afternoon.

Yes that is a gun on the counter! You never know when someone might come to steal your sausages.

Monday morning . . . 7 AM and darn foggy the smoking starts.

Bentley is inspecting the ash pan.

To smoke a 100 pounds as they were doing took about 10 hours.

I had to work so there aren't many "during" pictures.

As you can see the skies cleared up some time during the afternoon. BT is checking the temperatures of the sausages here.

This was pretty close to the end. The sausages need to reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

When the thermometer says it's cold. It's cold.

No forging in this kind of weather. The shop can be warmed up, but a 200 pound anvil takes a long time to warm.

Next best thing to do? Tie flies.

Frank Turley workshop

The Missouri Blacksmith Association hosted a Frank Turley workshop at Lou Meuller's place this past weekend.

The class was made possible by a memorial in memory of Doug Hendrickson.

Here is Doug's wife, Bonnie as she introduces us to Frank Turley.

Today we went back to Hope, Missouri to help out fellow blacksmith Joe.

Joe has a new toy. It's a Plasma cutter. He gave BT a few quick lessons and then it was his turn to try.

It sure makes quick work in preparing to make a gig.

Today we visited Joe's shop in Hope Missouri. Joe has been a little under the weather. He might tell you a lot, but he is doing much better.

Bernie uses Joe's trip hammer.

The reason for our visit was to help Joe forge 6 hinges for doors on a restored log cabin.

What does a ton of coal look like?

It looks like this plus 5 more sacks that were left in the front of the shop.

We took a trip Saturday to Scrub Oak Forge in DeSoto Missouri. It is one of the storage areas for the BAM coal supply.

The blacksmith lifted this coal 4 times. That's 4 tons times.

First he lifted it into place in the bed of the truck. Arriving home and accidentally locking the keys into the truck, he lifted it onto a trailer. From there he lifted it onto a 2 wheel dolly. He then wheeled it inside the shop
and lifted it into the storage area.

No wonder he slept good that night.

Sorry I forgot the camera on Saturday, I missed some beautiful picture opportunities.

SOFA tailgating

Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil held their quadstate round-up this past week. One of the main features of the conference is the tailgating.

You could see rows of vises.

Wet rows with plenty of rusty metal. Rusty especially since it rained Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There were trailer loads of tools. This trailer even included some old traps for my son to drool over.

This trailer contained many rivets of all different sizes. They were sold by the pound and got cheaper on the last day of the conference.

Miniature anvils. The owner said he still had 1500 at home.

A Blacksmith shop and a Timberframe

One thing close to my heart is our timber frame home. This
majestic frame stood tall before the stress skin panels were added.

Every morning I love waking up and see the golden oak beams 18 feet above my head.

One thing close to my husband's heart is his blacksmith shop. He can spend hours in here. He hammers out some wonderful items.

This video will show you a timber frame blacksmith shop being built at John C. Campbell folk school. Trust me when I tell you, both of us would be happy living and working in this magnificent building! The craftsmanship going into it is awesome.

BAM Meeting September 2009

BAM held it's September meeting at the shop of Matthew Burnett in Cameron, Missouri.

This picture shows some of the items Riley Rice used when demonstrating how to build a wooden wheel.

Here Riley, builds a fire around the completed rim using a bale of straw.

He added straw to it several times. The rim was then removed and quickly installed over the wooden wheel. He cooled the metal down with water as to not set the wheel on fire.

This shows the finished wheel.

Here President Ken Jansen starts the drawing for the iron in the hat session. This month items included, a shop swivel chair, garage door springs, 2 steel bars, back issues of Anvil Ring, gun magazines, a miniature Tom Clark anvil, a rake tooth and more.

One of the highlights of the day is the trade items. Here members are picking up the items they received in trade.

Here are the trade items before the drawing.

The oak leaf BT made. This was made from one piece of bar stock 1 1/2 inches wide by 5/16 inch thick by six inches long.

The leaf he won was made by Thomas Ratliff.

Thanks to Matthew and his Dad for hosting a great meeting. The chili and german chocolate cake was delicious.
